My students live in an economically disadvantaged area. It is a working class neighborhood, and many of the parents do not speak English. It is a challenge for many parents to put food on the table, especially in the current economy. Many parents do not have the time, education, or language skills to promote reading at home. The students are kind, inquisitive, and bright, but many are not interested in reading for fun.
