My students are high ability learners in grades kindergarten through fifth. I have the pleasure of teaching in 2 schools so I typically see 100 students throughout the year. These are students that have been referred for the academically/intellectually gifted program (AIG) by either their test scores or by teacher recommendations. I begin each year by asking the students to complete an interest survey, 90% of them note that they would like to learn more about technology. Of that 90%, at least half are girls. As educators, we know there is a gender gap that exists between males and females. If there is an expressed interest and I do nothing to foster it, then I haven’t done my job. While my students are very smart, they are lacking some of the resources and materials they need to achieve their greatest successes.
