We grow, explore, and inspire together as a school family. Knowing that they are in a safe and comfortable environment, allows for the students to focus on school and not outside problems. I love seeing them come alive and to actively participate in the learning process. What I don't like is seeing kids squirming uncomfortably in their seats or on the floor as their focus wanders.
Alternative seating is a great way to comfort the body and focus the mind. I watch my students try to rig backpacks and chairs in an effort to get comfortable for self-selected reading in my room and I would like to expand the seating options for my students. Students will have the opportunity to choose their seat for the day to use in the various activities.
One of the items that I have chosen for my room are kids wobble chairs. Chairs like this allow for movement without disrupting instruction. It helps keep minds focused while keeping bodies busy. The Wobble discs offer the same idea, on a more mobile scale, allowing students to move the cushions to multiple seats around the classroom. The last items that I added to my alternative options are memory foam bath mats. These can be used throughout the room to sit or lay down on. It is important to create spaces where students can comfortably sit to work on stamina during independent reading time. It is my hope that each of these seating options will create comfortable opportunities for learning.
