I work in an urban, separate public day school in Baltimore, Maryland. My students range in age from 14-21 and they have more than one disability. In Art they are able to explore materials and methods of creativity.
My goal is to give them the opportunity to have control over their own creativity and self-expression. This means looking at materials in a new way and allowing students to discover their own mark making. This is challenging when many of my students have only been able to express themselves with hand-over-hand guidance. I provide a safe environment for exploring, experimenting, and learning how to be expressive through the creation of ceramic art pieces. Much of what is created is created in clay with traditional hand-building techniques. Much of what is created results in outbursts of joy, hand clapping, and a large smile.
