Our library has been undergoing a lot of work to update the collection, both with fiction and non-fiction books. This is especially important since many of our students do not have access to reading books outside of school, and they need books of interest and educational value. The students are thrilled to read anything that I present to them, and enthusiastically scour the non-fiction shelves themselves to learn more about topics of personal interest.
This is my second year as the librarian for about 520 elementary students, grades K-5, but I actually reach many more students due to our highly transient population. Students have told me that the library is once again fun and exciting. Kids are now eager to come to the library, rather than dreading it. It is my goal to make reading an enjoyable activity of choice for ALL my students. Even the ones who claim to dislike reading, have ended up finding books they love.
