Earbuds were listed on the sixth grade school supply list, but not all students can afford supplies. Of the students that had their own earbuds more than half have been misplaced or broken and not replaced. My students spend a portion of their language arts and math class using individualized computer-based programs tailored to fit the skills they are lacking (anything from identifying short vowel sounds to dividing decimals using a standard algorithm to identifying theme in a literary text to multiplying fractions) and earbuds allow the children to be engaged in their independent work, not focused on what skill a classmate is working on.
When every student has a quality pair of earbuds, the classroom volume decreases and the room is transformed to a quiet, focused setting where each child is instructed on his/her own personal level, reaching their own personal goals free from distractions.
