My students are the roses that spring through concrete. They are African-American young people who attend a neighborhood academy for engineering and manufacturing. My students are resilient surviving financial, family and environmental challenges daily. However, they are diverse in their interests and talents which establishes their brilliance in a city (Chicago) where young people often succumb to their challenges.
