My urban public school kids come from an economically challenged neighborhood. Their sweetness is matched only by the desire to be better students with my help. I have faith in them, but not enough resources to keep them motivated to produce good quality work. The fifth graders I work with are reading and/or writing at two or three grades below their grade level. They love listening to great stories, sharing parts of their lives and experiences out loud, but have yet to define themselves as true readers or writers. Much of my direct instruction relies on their ability to just copy from the board without much independent work.
