First grade is a busy, fun-filled year! The children work hard to grow as readers and as writers all day long. I teach them in a whole group setting, in small groups, and one-on-one.
Having the right tools for the job is SO important. The bulk of the learning happens in small groups, and one-on-one with me as I can tailor my instruction to the needs of the children. I have spent all year watching what I've seen work for others, and have put together this master list of items that would really improve my teaching and my students' learning.
The dry erase sleeves will allow me to be flexible with the template I give children to work with. During writing I can put in sound boxes or lined paper, during reading I can put in a T chart to find vowel teams, the possibilities are endless!
The stools will help my small groups fit at my reading table, right now we have old heavy chairs. The chair legs get crossed, and just sitting down to learn takes way too long! I want the kids to be comfortable and be able to move in and out of the learning space quickly and quietly.
The teaching books will help guide my instruction in writing, especially with the lowest performing students.
The management of the materials is a really big job, and my classroom is very small. Getting organized is how I hope to spend much of my summer!
