My students are kindergarteners whose first day in my class and at our school is typically the first time they've been out of their homes. It's often their first experience with a school environment. They come without preschool experience or any concept of school at all. In addition to knowledge, I have the additional responsibility to teach them very basic social skills which is just as rewarding as it is challenging. Our school is an overcrowded school in the largest school district in California. Our school and students are over 95% socioeconomically disadvantaged. Nearly 70% are language learners. Not only do they struggle with the language, but they also lack basic concepts of the alphabet, numbers, and independence. They are very capable students, with very caring families, but the need for them to be educated well beyond state defined standards, and well beyond the walls of the classroom, is mandatory in bringing about change to the state of education.
