I teach 1st grade in a small town in Mississippi on the Gulf of Mexico. The majority of my students come from very poor families. They live in homes that more than likely still have water damage from Hurricane Katrina. Most of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Students in my class mostly come from homes where one or both parents are in jail, and the family is in extreme poverty. These children come to class everyday and do their best to learn so they can better themselves.
