Charlie May Simon book winners are selected by 4th-6th grade students in Arkansas who read three or more of the selected books. As a classroom teacher, I always like to make sure I have a set of these books available for students to promote the importance of this challenge. While our school library may have the copies, it is hard for all 4th and 5th grade students to get a copy easily.
"The purpose of the award is to promote better reading for children and to recognize Mrs. John Gould Fletcher, an outstanding Arkansas author who wrote under the pen name Charlie May Simon." These books are inspiring, have an important message and always help kids learn about different situations they may not have experienced. There are books that many students may never pick up, but because they made the "Charlie May Simon list", they will check out and read cover to cover.
