Fourth graders, although they are quickly approaching middle school, still have the "wiggles." This is especially true for an inclusion class -students with special needs mixed in with the general population. All too often, my students try to get out their wiggles by playing with pencils, cutting up paper, or rocking their chairs back on two legs. These methods can be distracting and downright unsafe for students. With the use of bouncy bands, cushions, and balance balls, students will be able to (quietly) get their wiggles out, while staying focused on their work!
So many of my students come to school with something weighing on their minds, making it difficult to focus. Anticipating a move to another school, being far away from family, or a parent deployment can all affect a student's ability to focus in school. My students know that doing their best in school is the best way to make their parents proud, whether they are home or away at the time. Being able to get out their wiggles to stay focused and learn in class is the best way to do accomplish that!
