Our school does not have enough low income students to qualify for Title I funding, but the community is not wealthy enough to provide for our needs. Many of my students were excited to go the the school library to check out non-fiction but by the end of the day, most of the interesting titles had been checked out by the other 13 classes. They are novice readers who need new books with bright covers to draw them in. The school is not providing enough new books for them and less than a fourth say they have ever used the public library. When I do book talks on the titles I have in my library, their eyes light up but I have more students than I have books on my shelves.
The book titles I am requesting come from student surveys and lists of top YA non-fiction so I'm sure the kids will want to read them. My students are requesting non-fiction books like My War: Killing Time in Iraq, Zodiac, and A Stolen Life. I'm asking for non-fiction like Persepolis, A Planet of Viruses and Packing for Mars.
