More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education.
For my project, I chose a variety of children's literature focused on social/emotional concepts. Our world is ever-changing which makes the need for social/emotional learning much more prevalent. With a variety of ways to teach social/emotional concepts, children's literature is a great avenue for students to learn. These books listed in my project will not only enhance my students' social/emotional competencies, but also their reading comprehension skills. Students who can relate to characters in books as well as analyze their actions and feelings will take away more from the lessons, with the help of these books.
Inclusion, kindness, empathy, and compassion are just some of the concepts students must understand to enhance their social/emotional development.
Literature is one way teachers can support the social/emotional development of students. It is my hope my students can continue to learn in a way which enhances their social/emotional competencies as well as their reading abilities.
