I am a Reading Specialist serving grades K-5 in two different schools. I travel from classroom to classroom within each school, providing services to students who are reading below grade level. The schools I teach in are old and decrepit, with no air conditioning, leaking roofs, and many service providers sharing space in old storage closets. My students live in an urban setting and over 87% are living at, or below ,the poverty levl. All the students receive free breakfast and lunch. They are ethnically diverse and many are bilingual, speaking Spanish, Portuguese, and Creole, in addition to learning the English Language. They are at least one year behind in reading skills. My students are enthusiastic, enjoy learning, and want to succeeed. But, most of all, THEY WANT TO LEARN TO READ!!!
