To start a good writing workshop curriculum, it is important for students to have a comfortable space on an area rug to facilitate talking and brainstorming, which is the first and probably most important step in writing. Because I have no carpet in my room, I believe a comfortable spot to spend our time learning while sharing can best be done on a large area rug.
Students need good examples through rich text in children's books by great authors. These books will help students learn how to write narrative, realistic fiction and persuasive stories, as well as non-fiction, biographies, realistic fiction and comic strips. By listening and reading great text examples students will become independent writers who enjoy writing and are excited to write.
Students also need their own writing samples on hand with their own Writing Folders, to show a sense of ownership over their writing. While I have most of the supplies needed for writing (paper, pencils, chart paper) I really want students to have their own writing folders that will last, and a place where each student can go get his/her folder when he/she wants to write during independent time as well.
