My students need IPad tablets so that they can explore a world that is outside of themselves. Autism will frequently cause children to pull into themselves, and technology is one avenue into that inner world that will pull them into an outer expression.
Our classroom is not wired for internet, so these IPads will allow us to access applications and technology even though we can't use the wireless internet that other students in the school enjoy. I am asking for five IPad minis that could contain applications these students will enjoy and learn with. Being able to have this kind of technology in my classroom would create endless opportunities for my students to excel. My project will make a difference because it will take them beyond the walls of our classroom and allow them to explore things they usually wouldn't have a chance, due to their disability. The iPads would allow students to use symbols, photographs, visual scenes, videos, communicate words, phrases, or short sentences. Students could engage in conversations with both peers and teachers. For many students, an augmentative communication device may also help open the door to better verbal expression skills as well.
