The learning and use of microscopes is a skill that can open student minds for advanced learning. My students will be able to see their world in a new perspective that they before could only see in a text book or on the internet. This opportunity is a rare opportunity for my students because of the socioeconomic status of our city.
Compound microscopes would be a powerful tool for learning in my classroom because they allow students to see microscopic organisms first-hand instead of in some textbook.
I love to promote hands-on learning in my class whenever I can. Having these compound microscopes will have my students creating slides of their own cells and observing prepared slides of cells and microorganisms including germs that make them and others sick. Understanding that these organisms are present even when we can't see them with the naked eye or even a magnifying glass can influence student hygiene behaviors and promote good health. I can only anticipate the number of students who will choose a possible career path associated with science because of their experiences with these compound microscopes!
