My 1st Grade Dual Language class consists of 44 students, 22 native Spanish speakers and 22 native English speakers. They receive instruction in Spanish and English. The setup of my class results in improved social relationships among my students because they come from different linguistic and ethnic backgrounds. My students vary in their abilities and are at various stages of language acquisition. Most of my students have been together since Kindergarten; some have been together since Pre-K and will continue to be together until the completion of fourth grade. They are very comfortable with each other and they tend to socialize often which in turn facilitates new learning. They have created close nit relationships in an environment that allows for emotional and intellectual growth. They encourage each other to think, take risks, and feel comfortable in their newly acquired language.
