My students are English language learners from a small city in California. Many of my students need help with basic math skills such as base-ten counting, simple addition, and math strategy.
Monopoly is a great way to help these students learn math. For one, it gives them an opportunity to play the classic game (which sadly, not all of them have even played before).
Secondly, they learn how to count around the board by using tens, and learn how to count money in the hundreds.
Strategy is also key in this game because you have to decide if a property is worth buying, which is a problem solving skill I don't often get to teach in class.
