Our state recently began requiring the use of calculators on the 8th grade science state assessment. My students have been using a variety of inexpensive calculators that are easily broken. Students compete with each other to claim the "good" calculators during class. Funds are scarce to replace the broken, worn-out ones.
Across the state, the lowest scoring test questions are the ones that require students to use math skills that many have not mastered. These problems do not accurately reflect my student's knowledge and skills in the subject of science. Calculators will help my students demonstrate their science strength rather than their math struggles.
My students need a set of sturdy calculators and to know how to use them before the state assessment. Everyone using the same calculator will make instruction easier. Students will be able to focus more on their science instruction and worry less about the computation.
