My students come to school everyday 30 minutes before school starts to eat a free breakfast before they arrive at our classroom door. They walk quickly down our hallway with full tummies and smiles on their Hispanic faces, they are eager to greet me at our door with hugs, high fives, and/or handshakes. While at school they each eat a free hot lunch and have an afternoon snack. Snack time is one of their favorite times of day. They enjoy this time of day where they become the teacher, and I the student. They try their hardest to teach me how to speak Spanish because at least 50% of them are bi-lingual, and some only speak Spanish at home. My students are always ready to learn and enjoy the reprieve that the school's walls offer from the realities of hunger, chaos and inconsistencies that await in our neighborhood.
