My fifth grade class is eager to share their thoughts, experiences, and ideas through writing. The reality is that for some, writing serves as an outlet where they can share experiences they need to get off their chest. Life experiences that a ten year old child should not have to face. My school is located in a low-income, high poverty community in graffiti-ridden surroundings. I know this area well because it is where I grew up. This has helped establish trust and rapport with my students so when I give them that little extra push, they know that I was once in their shoes.
Yet, when students are given the opportunity to write, they can be transported from their surroundings, forget about what may be bothering them at home or on the walk home from school. Through the Common Core Standards my students are asked to meet high expectations, especially in writing.
