I am wanting to make changes to my classroom that will make a difference for the kindergarten student who will learn there. After much research, I feel the best way to do this is to have flexible/alternative seating. Research shows that there are an abundance of benefits to flexible seating. One benefit is that it improves participation in the classroom. It is also shown to increase academic performance.
Because the child has choices in how and where they will learn, they have better attention and focus. This in turn shows that their behavior is improved as well.
There are also physical benefits to the different types of chairs that I am asking for. The movement made by the child burns calories, releases energy, improves core strength, and improves posture.
Kindergarten is usually a child's first school year in a school setting. It is crucial that this year provides them with a positive experience that establishes their love of learning. I cannot think of a better time to provide them with a flexible seating learning environment.
