Our students need books that teach them about "windows and mirrors." They will read these new books where a character may remind them of themselves, whether their ethnicity, background, upbringing, sexual preference, or gender identity. These reflections are the mirror. Almost just as important, they need to learn about characters with whom they do not identify. These individuals do not look like them, live different lives, and they may not be relatable. This builds the window where readers are understanding and accepting the wonderful melting pot surrounding them.
The Bearcat 4 Diversity wants to build a group where all members read this material and reflect on what they have learned. We anticipate a new book every month, and with more options comes more reading, more learning, and more understanding of others around us.
