One area my students need the most practice with is listening and speaking in both English and Spanish. Being a learner of the English language myself, I know first-hand how intimidating and difficult it can be to learn a new language and gain the confidence to speak to native peers.
I'm requesting a carpet rug to provide my students with an area to collaborate in close proximity with their classmates. Currently, my students gather on the tile floor to form discussion groups. If gifted, the carpet will also provide an area for me to instruct my students close at hand without burdening them with an uncomfortable seating arrangement.
A daily practice in my classroom is to enhance students' knowledge through various cooperative learning strategies. Having a neighbor at arm's length will help lower their affective filter and boost their confidence to have conversations. This in hand will assist them in processing information given to them in either their first or second language.
