I have the honor of teaching almost 400 students in grades K-4. Students have music class two times per week. While they are in my room, we sing, move, create, and play. With such little time with my students, not a minute is wasted. The students stay active throughout class learning music theory, singing & playing skills, social skills, how to move their bodies, and how to express their emotions.
My students come to music eager to learn, even when they are struggling in other areas of learning or their personal lives. Over 50% of my students live in low-income housing. Many of my students come with a trauma background or are currently facing major traumas in their lives. When in music, students are provided a classroom that focuses not only on learning, but also on their social & emotional needs. Music is used as a tool to help promote confidence and character in my students.
