My students learn best when they are active participants in the process of their work. They work independently, but have the freedom to discuss and critique each other's work in our classroom setting.
I teach art in an urban high school where most students commute in from neighboring cities. Many of my students when they first come have limited exposure to artists, styles, art fundamentals, including techniques and media. When they come to class they are at different levels of knowledge and experience. I try to infuse in them a love of art through continuous reminders that art is indeed a form of communication and encourage them to develop their voices. They are extremely curious and motivated. When they feel successful in a completed work, they gain a tremendous amount of confidence and look forward and are eager to apply their skills in their next work. They spend a lot of time in my room before and after school.
