Children need to feel safe and secure in their environment to learn. Before kids can learn, they need to be able to regulate their emotions. My project is to create a calm and comfortable environment that will foster social emotional learning.
Since everyone learns in different ways, the materials requested in my project will help all students have access to social emotional learning tools. Through the use of games, visuals, books and sensory tools, my students will learn how to recognize their feelings and learn coping skills to help foster positive self growth. They will also learn the impact that their behavior has on themself, as well as others.
The students that I work with are in Kindergarten through fourth grade. It is imperative that they are taught life long coping skills during this time. The reason is so that from a young age, they have the necessary strategies that will empower them when they become dysregulated. By being able to explicitly teach feelings and emotional regulation when a child is calm, increases their ability to access their coping strategies when distressed. The long lasting effects of behavior regulation issues impact children's self esteem, friendships, academics and overall well being. Please help me give my students the skills they need to become flexible and self reflective individuals who are able to grow into strong, well adjusted leaders.
