My school is a K-5 school in a large Ohio school district. Strings classes are offered to our students in the fourth and fifth grade. Every year I greet excited students who have been waiting since Kindergarten to participate in the strings program. These boys and girls are willing to give up recess time as well as participation in other school activities to take part in the instrumental music program at our school.
We focus on leadership and strong character as daily habits for our students. Our young learners and their parents are eager for opportunities to take part in positive programs that will keep them off the troubled streets of their neighborhoods. Music is a way to involve children in positive experiences at school.
Some parents are willing and able to rent a violin or cello so their child may participate in the strings program. Many, however struggle to make ends meet, and simply cannot afford to buy or rent an instrument.
