Working with gifted students can challenging yet extremely rewarding. At times, the regular content curriculum is just not enough for these students. I have the challenge of providing in depth study or materials, activities and resources that interest, engage and meet the needs of these high ability learners. Every year at the beginning of the school year, I survey the students to find out topics of interests and goals they hope to achieve during the school year. Every year they respond that they enjoy hands-on, inquiry/project based learning. They learn best by tinkering, exploring, creating, experimenting, collaborating with peers and problem solving.
Implementing a "makerspace" into the gifted classroom will allow the students to thrive in a space that sparks their interests and allows them to explore their passions. Tools such as a 3-D printer/printing pen will help students bring their creative ideas to life by turning their computer drawings and designs into a concrete artifact. Little Bits Gizmos and Gadgets, Cublets, Engino and Qubits will allow students to build working and moving models and program their designs to complete tasks using various math skills and technology. The items chosen for this makerspace will provide endless authentic learning opportunities for my gifted students.
The donations received through this project will provide a challenge to our gifted students by engaging them in critical thinking and creativity through authentic exploration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. As I completed research to ensure this project was successful, I came across this quote..."We are all makers, and when we share, engage, reflect and remake, we become masters." A makerspace would be a dream come true for my middle school gifted students.
