My students attend a Title I school in which 100% of students qualify for a free lunch. Most of my students are English language learners. They are children of either immigrants who sometimes take on more than one job to make ends meet or children of first generation parents who, due to the economy, have fallen on hard times. Some of my students have fallen victim to divorce or the passing of a parent. Books are the one escape they have to take them somewhere away from the harsh realities they may face everyday.
Since most of my students are English language learners, they not only have the challenge of becoming completely literate, but mastering a second language as well. They are eager to learn and are extremely polite and well behaved. The one thing they wished they had more of is books to read at home. They rely on the one book they are allowed to check out of the school library each week IF the library is open and available.
