As many others, we are a diverse school with a lot of challenges. Our school is 95 percent low income poverty school, one parent homes. We have a Deaf and Hard of hearing program along with an Excel program. We have refugees and students that come from 23 different countries. These students speak 20 different languages and dialects. Every student here has the desire to learn and explore. As a librarian I am responsible to get them on the path to love reading. With a lot of language barriers a book with pictures is the closest we can get.
When you see a child that has been raised in a refugee camp come to school for their first time and look at a library and you see their smile that means everything. No one can mistake a smile. To watch the growth over the school year and into the next is very powerful when you know that you helped with that by putting a book in their hand and giving them the opportunity to grow and succeed.
