I teach 8th grade English Language Arts to about 120 students in East Oakland. My students are the reason for my personal growth and resilience. I teach with limited funding and my students are faced with numerous challenges at home and in their community. They are strong advocates for themselves and their families, and I admire their strength and courage to face all adversity and still make it to school.
As their English Language Arts teacher, I watch my students progress as avid readers and strong communicators each and every day. They stand together as a class to discuss social issues that impact their community and they take great pride in their town. Most of my students have been exposed to gang and gun violence and family trauma, yet their resilience is extraordinary. My students are learning to find their place and write their own narratives in today's society.
