Many of my students have significant learning disabilities and have struggled for years to master their basic addition and multiplication facts. Even though most begin their 6th grade year performing mathematically at a 3rd grade level, I am required to introduce them to 6th grade level material. As one can imagine, this causes a significant increase in anxiety and frustration for these students. Specifically, all operations with fractions become big hurdles to my student's ability to access that grade level content! Many students, despite issues with working memory and cognitive processing delays, are able to pick up patterns in the process of solving certain grade-level concepts, but struggle to find success, in the form of an accurate solution to a given problem, due to minor calculation errors.
The scientific calculators inject an instant boost of confidence for learners who have been told year in and year out that perhaps they are just "not good at math". Once they start finding some success, a mindset shift occurs and they start to believe that maybe they CAN do this!
Many members of our community are on a fixed or low income. Students struggle to find and bring in a scientific calculator to help them overcome these basic calculation and fraction calculation issues. Often students come in with basic function calculators from the dollar store, and are disappointed when they are not able to perform the functions offered by the scientific calculator. A class-set of these calculators would insure that each student in my classroom would have that extra boost of support they need to find success in tackling the required, more challenging levels of curriculum.
We also are in need of a new electric pencil sharpener! Gotta have sharp pencils to write down all of those steps we plug into our calculators!
