Our classroom is in a Title 1 school where many of the students come from low income families, live in poverty, or are homeless. In addition, my classroom is the integrated Kindergarten meaning it is a mixture of special education students and regular education students. Most students do not have books at home, our classroom is the only place they get to dive into reading. By storing the books in magazine files my students can easily carry them to a special reading spot and organize them into categories based on their interests.
My goal is for students to take ownership of the classroom and their learning. To achieve this goal, we need materials that provide students the opportunity to self-manage and take responsibility of learning. Magazine files provide this opportunity because they are light, contain less books, and easily labeled making the process of picking out a book efficient and effective for Kindergartners.
