My students are deaf or hard of hearing and because of this need more language and vocabulary development. We stress learning vocabulary thematically through science and history so that students find ways to connect to language that feels relevant and real to their lives. Most of my students do not get to learn these real life things in their homes because their families have limited communication with them. We use class time to try to fill the gaps and give them hands-on experiences to make their learning of essential standards something they will take with them and use in their real life.
