Our students need support in their literacy needs in Math and Science. Obtaining three different types of Scholastic News and Time for Kids magazines will provide my students with a learning opportunity that they otherwise would not have. It will allow the students to discuss many real world STEM events and discoveries, have debates, and make literacy fun in Math and Science.
I plan on tapping into their creativity by making this class a discovery zone and giving them every opportunity to be classroom experts on current events. Having the ability to problem-solve, reason and analyze information will open doors into their future as scientist, doctors, and careers we have yet to think of. STEM literacy will give students confidence to continue to learn about the world around them and actively engage in it.
My goal is for the students to begin to see STEM, not as isolated school subjects, but as life subjects with connections to the world they interact in everyday. All young people should be prepared to think deeply and to think well so that they have the chance to become the innovators, educators, researchers, and leaders who can solve the most pressing challenges facing our nation and our world, both today and tomorrow.
While STEM and literacy skills are often viewed as two separate educational priorities, the disciplines actually go hand in hand. In order to become an accomplished scientist or engineer, one must first develop strong literacy skills and these Scholastic subscriptions will help me do just that.
