Traditional classrooms limit the amount of movement and brain activity children need to succeed simply because of their boxy one-size-fits-all design. By providing a classroom with a sofa, bean bags, and modern furniture, students are able to choose a variety of places to sit throughout a day. By changing where they sit and on what they sit on, they will limit negative affects to their skeletal systems and they will increase their brain activity. In addition, the different textures, shapes, and heights of this type of seating accommodates a variety learners with specific needs. This type of classroom furniture will promote an atmosphere of social interaction, much like a coffeehouse or cafe does for our community. Placed around the room, these pieces will give my students a chance to meet together in small or large groups where they will read, share ideas, and collaborate on projects. They will talk in quiet whispers or perform and share their learning with a larger audience. My classroom will be a place that brings them together in community.
