You may wonder how my passion for this topic initiated. I picked up yoga about four years ago. Now it has become a part of my regular workout routine. In January, my administrators asked me to work with a student one on one in hopes of reducing her intense emotional anxiety. The goal was that through breathing techniques and yoga, we could provide her ways to channel her emotions. Since I was not trained as a yoga teacher, we would just follow child's yoga videos on YouTube. I believe this practice was successful and feel that it would be beneficial to many students. At the same time, my yoga studio offered a 200-hour yoga certification teaching training from April through June. I decided to go through the certification and become more knowledgeable of the practice.
Now, I’m all in and thrilled about this opportunity to bring together my passion for learning, my passion for teaching, and my love of yoga together, to better support our students.
This year my district is supporting me in researching the effects of school-based yoga. Students are invited to join me for yoga during the recess. Yoga is being used as brain breaks and as a way to calm nerves before and after tests. I am offering an after school club for yoga. We even hope to offer yoga in the morning before standardized testing. I believe school-based yoga will have infinite benefits to helping students cope with anxiousness and stress, be mindful in their everyday lives, and embrace a growth mindset. With your help, these supplies of yoga mats and yoga blocks will help us offer yoga to more students.
