Room 17 at Coyote Hills Elementary School in Newark, CA is a diverse, engaged, collaborative classroom. We read and write everyday, extending our critical thinking skills. We work hard and have fun. My students come from all backgrounds, but mostly from poor families struggling to live in the Bay Area. Most of our student body is on Free and Reduced Lunch. Raising money is exceptionally difficult as our families have to choose between food and paying bills. There is no extra money to give for all of the materials and experiences we should have. My students deserve tools in the classroom and funds for trips out of the classroom to connect their learning to art, music and the outside world.
