My classroom is described as a "self-contained" classroom for students in grades K-2 in a program for students with delays in communication and social skills. Many of them are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
I enjoy teaching students with special needs. This year, I have 9 students- all boys!
Throughout our day we do curriculum and activities that are the same as our general education peers- phonics, reading comprehension, writing skills, math and resources such as P.E. and Art class. Some of the children in my class are also leaving for inclusion opportunities throughout the day to get a chance to be with typical peers.
In our class we use patience, accept each other's differences, learn to use our "words" in order to get our wants and needs met, practice social/emotional strategies to remain calm and have as much fun as possible while learning.
