The students in my classes have low standardized test scores for reading. This affects not only their English classes but how well they read in all their classes. These students are 9th graders. They've gotten to the point at which they know they are behind and perceive themselves as failures. Many of them feel like they are stupid because of their lack of academic success.
Most of these students say they hate reading, rarely read when not forced to, and have never been read to by an adult. We attend a school that is very diverse and middle class, yet most of the students in this class are socioeconomically disadvantaged or come from homes in which neither parent has a college degree. I have told these students that I will find them a book that they enjoy before the year is over. I believe that I can make this happen for them, I simply need the resources.
