In our classroom, we meet whole class at the carpet for many reasons! An easel would be a perfect addition to our carpet area!
First, an easel will provide me a place to hang chart paper so that we may create anchor charts, brainstorm, or read stories.
Also, at my school we use the Orton Gillingham approach to phonics. In Orton Gillingham (or OG for short) we practice saying our sounds through the use of letter cards. We then use those same letter cards to blend words. However, right now I am placing those cards on the ledge of my chalkboard beside my carpet area and as a result, some of my students have difficulty seeing the cards. An easel would allow me to display those cards in a way that all of my students can participate. We also learn new spelling concepts each week in OG and brainstorm words that fit that spelling pattern. An easel would allow me to hang chart paper where we will brainstorm words. Furthermore, an easel would allow me and my students to engage in shared writing and brainstorming during our writer's workshop!
Finally, an easel would allow my students and I to create anchor charts in math. Some of these charts may include: Subtraction Strategies, Addition Strategies, Attributes of Shapes, Data Collection, and more!
My first graders are amazing and I really believe a teaching easel will enhance my teaching and give my students an opportunity to excel. Thank you for your support!
