My students take my Photojournalism class with the expectation of learning to shoot on a "big camera.” However, such cameras are not provided for them, and most students don't come from homes where such cameras are available. Until now, we have been learning composition on their smart phone cameras and classroom iPads. With this equipment, I can't teach much more than very basic composition rules.
My ultimate goal is to have enough entry level DSLR cameras for my students to work in pairs on projects. These Nikon 3400 kits will be a start toward the goal of every student having the chance to learn photography on quality equipment. With these cameras, I can begin to teach students more advanced skills in photography that will ultimately bring up the quality of photos in student publications and possibly interest them in the larger world of Journalism. Additionally, it will increase the number of photographers that we can have out for various school events.
