I am a 5th grade teacher in an urban school in downtown Stockton. Our school started in 2011 with a little over 100 students. We are now over 800 strong in TK - 8th grade. Our goal has always been social justice and providing choices for urban families. Over 80% of our population qualifies for free or reduced lunch. We have students from all types of families and living situations, including several living in shelters.
My classroom is a safe space for my kids to relax, let go of the outside struggles of life and learn. My goal is to not only meet their educational needs but their emotional and physical needs as well. Sometimes that means a listening ear, extra encouragement or access to supplies such as books. Other times it's a snack, or a place to relax and reset. Whatever their needs, if I can provide it, my kiddos will get it!
