My classroom library has always a point of pride for me, and I strive to pass on a love of learning to all of my students. Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with care and dignity, and students are thankful for the opportunities to read something (especially something that is not online), and something that is representative of their interests.
Simply addressing student interests is not enough anymore, however, and our classroom library needs to be more representative of our diverse and beautiful world! All of the books in this project have been chosen with my students' desire to understand the world in mind. I have watched them the past few weeks of school read titles just like these and I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read inclusive books independently at their own grade level. The best way to increase reading ability and cultural awareness is to... well... provide access, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger as people while also getting them reinterested in reading through enriching content options.
