My first graders need to experience and create math with their hands in order to understand the high level math concepts that we are trying to have them learn. Number and quantity, size, measurement, comparison, shape, proportion and volume are just a few of the concepts our first graders are working on. With these cubes, links, and shapes, and games. My first graders can have experiences that will lead to a greater understanding of the math concepts we are trying to teach them. If we give them opportunities for them to explore with patterns by creating and using shapes, pattern blocks, or cubes the will have a better understanding when of patterns when they start working the patterns in numbers. Kids need to experience these concepts in their world, with their hands in play, before math will make sense on paper. Math manipulative's—objects that teach about a math area—are one way to bring hands-on practice to math learning while making the learning engaging and fun for them.
