The school I am teaching at is in a low-income neighborhood. All but three percent of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Sixty percent of the children are not reading on grade level. Our staff is entirely new and we will be striving to turn the school around. My students have not had the same opportunities as children in middle class neighborhoods and will struggle to fulfill a simple supply list. I believe they deserve to have beautiful supplies, including writer's notebooks to express their ideas and materials to publish their work. I will be new to my school, as will most teachers this next year. I know my students will be nervous not knowing what to expect. I want to inspire them, give them a way to express themselves and make them feel supported and challenged.
